What is it about?

The photovoltaic current characteristics for Fe-doped LiNbO3 film is investigated under visible light illumination. The photocurrent are demonstrated to be dramatically enhanced along the Ps direction, which is over 500 times as large as that of the bulk Fe-LN single crystals. Based on the Density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we attributed this enhancement to the tensile lattice strain of eptaxial film.

Why is it important?

Although it is well known that the bulk photovoltaic effect in LiNbO3 under visible light illumination is markedly improved by the Fe-doping, we firstly report dramatic enhancement in photovoltaic current for strained Fe-doped LiNbO3 epitaxial films.

Perspectives

In this paper, the control of the lattice strain along the Ps (spontaneous polarization) direction is demonstrated to be effective in enhanceing the bulk photovoltaic effect, which can be applied to wide variety of ferroelectric film.
