What is it about?

Given that the phytocannabinoid cannabidiol has been found to be useful to reduce seizures in Dravet syndrome patients, we wanted to investigate wheter such benefits may derive from dysregulation in endocannabinoid-related proteins. To this end, we analyzed gene expression for these proteins in lymphocytes obtained from patients and control subjects

Why is it important?

This was one of the first studies addressing the molecular bases for explaining the effects of cannabidiol in Dravet patients. The elucidation of these molecular bases may help in the design of better treatments

Perspectives

The identification of changes in CB2 receptors and other inflammation-related proteins in Dravet patients may indicate that they may be used as potential targets for developing cannabinoid-based disease-modifying therapies that improve the current effects of cannabidiol
