What is it about?

An important factor in predicting whether people who are worried about stressful events choose to gather new information in order to cope with it is not curiosity, but rather a desire to reduce worry.

Why is it important?

This study helps explain why situational variables alone fail to reliably predict whether people will seek out or passively avoid knowledge about potential threats to their well being. Also, it turns out that the motive to seek out information when under stress is not curiosity, but rather an incurious desire to reduce worry.

Perspectives

The findings reported in this paper should be of great interest to health psychologists, clinicians, and any researchers who study the factors that determine whether people who are worried about potential threats their physical or psychological health will seek out or choose to passively avoid knowledge relevant to such potential threats.
