What is it about?

This is a study looking at the economic and medical (severity of sickness, duration of hospital stay, death rate) burden of adverse events due to drugs or medication utilizing a very large database of hospitalized patients. We have shown that adverse drug event carries a significant burden of inpatient hospital care, incurs more cost, and leads to increased loss of life.

Why is it important?

Adverse drug events have been shown to cause significant rise in costs with increased chances of dying. This has been shown in varying population and different geographies around the world. However, in the USA, such comprehensive study has not been done for a long time. Hence, we utilized large database from recent years to show the same impact of drug related adverse events in the USA.
