What is it about?

Composites have been designed which can be used to protect electronic equipment from electromagnetic interference in microwave range. Composites contain a constituent, Red mud, which will provide the required magnetic properties to the shielding material because of the Iron content it has. Also, red mud is the insoluble industrial waste generated during the production of alumina. About 1–2 tons of RM residues (dry weight) are generated for a ton of alumina produced. Such residue has accumulated over years and causes a serious environmental problem due to its high alkalinity and large amount. Currently, most RM generated from alumina plants is disposed in landfills or dumped at sea. The disposal and management of RM tailing residues constitute one of the most challenging problems facing the bauxite and alumina industry. So this paper aims at not just providing better shielding from electromagnetic interference but also aims at waste utilization which would also result in cost effectiveness of the material.

Why is it important?

The technological development based on material engineering has been revolutionizing the electronics industry due to the expansion of small and efficient electronic/communication devices. These electronic equipment are used in high operating frequency and bandwidth. This may lead to the possibility of deterioration of the radio wave atmosphere which is known as electromagnetic interference (EMI). EMI consists of many unwanted radiated signals, which may be highly damaging to the electronic system or equipment performance. This problem may lead to severe damage to communication systems and working on many electronic devices and may be harmful for human health as continuous exposure may lead to cancer, tumor, skin problems, laziness, stress etc. So current technological drift has been intended for the development of an EMI shield to minimize these associated problems.

Perspectives

This paper emphasize on designing composites using conducting polymers and red mud which will be used in making the protective shield which will be used for interference from electromagnetic radiations in X -band as well as Ku-band.
