Why is it important?

Rooted in an interactionist symbolic framework, our research highlights how cultural values, social support, and familial roles shape the way women navigate their breast cancer journey. We explore how patients engage in acts of reciprocity—toward parents, spouses, children, and peers—to construct meaning and resilience throughout their recovery. The study offers valuable insights for nurses and healthcare professionals working with Chinese breast cancer patients by illustrating the importance of family-oriented coping, social reciprocity, and culturally sensitive care.

Perspectives

The findings help to advance nursing knowledge through global, interdisciplinary perspectives, particularly in the areas of oncology nursing, psychosocial care, and culturally competent healthcare practices. By shedding light on how collectivist cultural norms influence recovery, our study contributes to the growing discourse on patient-centered and culturally responsive nursing care.
