What is it about?

This study was oriented to make a biofilm sensor based on graphene powder. Being compared with CVD graphene or mechanical exfoliation graphene, you could get commercial graphene powder much more easily at this point. Silane compound coating could fix graphene powder in its free volume and could be used as biofilm sensor basically. We described the experiments for the purpose in this paper.

Why is it important?

The paper has two important results. Graphene powder could be used as biofilm sensing tool. The staining of biofilms by crystal violet solution was effective, in addition of Raman spectroscopy. Because biofilms are almost equivalent to infection in our bodies, this sensing idea will be much more important in the near future.

Perspectives

This paper demonstrated the basic and theoretical possibility to use graphene powder with silane compound coating as biofilm sensing. If we could apply some electrochemical or electromagnetic ways to get the signals from the graphene powder dispersed silane compounds, the technology will be useful from the practical viewpoints.
