What is it about?

Out-of-plane alignment of the magnetization of 20 nm (La,Na)MnO3 film grown on LaAlO3 (001) substrate is revealed at low temperatures. It is concluded that anisotropy energy, originated from a substrate-induced compressive strain, is responsible for the unusual behavior of the ultrathin films of sodium-doped manganites.
