What is it about?

During the menopause many women develop GSM which is present also in female urethra due to atrophy of its tissues, causing among other things also urinary symptoms as are dysuria, urgency, frequency etc. This paper showed that using intraurethral cannula for non-ablative irradiation of urethra with Smooth mode ErYAG laser is producing the improvement of all of these urinary symptoms of GSM.

Why is it important?

The results of this study show that mild and controled warming / hyperthermia of urethtal mucosa, using non-ablative ErYAG laser can produce the improvement of urinary symptoms of GSM in non-invasive way without adverse effects and that these improvements could last at least 6 months.

Perspectives

This article is describing the first study about the use of intraurethral laser for GSM and it was a great challenge to start charting new teritorries in urogynecology. I'm grateful and priviledged to be given a chance to be the member of such a great team of reserchers working on this project.
