What is it about?

In this research paper h-BN nanoparticles have been dispersed in the conventional engine oil. The improvement in the tribological properties have been evaluated on a tribo-pair comprising of cylinder liner and piston ring, in comparison to the base oil.

Why is it important?

The piston ring and the cylinder liner of an IC engine particularly pose challenges to tribologists, for being a significant source of friction losses in engines. Reduced power loss, low efficiency, high fuel consumption, large wear, high emissions, and effective cooling are related to piston ring-cylinder liner interface lubrication. The reduction of wear and friction losses in an IC engine is a function of good lubrication. Effect of various concentrations of h-BN nano-particles as additive in conventional lubricant SAE 20W50 on friction and wear on piston ring pin and cylinder liner tribo-pair have been studied. The results showed that friction and wear of piston ring pin and cylinder liner tribo-pair strongly depend on the concentration of h-BN nano-particles in the lubricant SAE 20W50. Use of h-BN nano-particles as additives in SAE 20W50 greatly increased the anti-friction and anti-wear properties of the lubricant. Four ball wear preventive test showed 20% decrease in the wear scar diameter of the balls with h-BN nano-particles as additive in the lubricant SAE 20W50. Friction and wear tests on tribometer revealed that h-BN nano-particles as additive reduced the wear loss of about 30 to 70%, in comparison to lubricant without additive at all sliding velocities.

Perspectives

Lubricants that are produced from mineral oil don’t have all the desired tribological properties. It has already been established that addition of solid lubricant particles, such as, MoS2, graphite, WS2 and hex-boron nitride (h-BN) to mineral oil improves the tribological properties of lubricants to a large extent. However, very little research has been carried out on the effect of h-BN as additive in conventional lubricants in practical application, such as, piston ring on cylinder liner in an IC engine. commercialization of lubricants with nanoparticles as additives will revolutionize the automotive industry and as such can be extended to other areas using lubricants extensively.
