What is it about?
Authors balance risk and reward when selecting journals to submit to leading to complex selection criteria. Authors gather the often incomplete data for informing their choices using a variety of methods. This study reports on the new services being developed directly in response to author's difficulty in finding the right journal to submit – that is, which one is credible and the right fit, what is the likelihood of being accepted for publication, what is the quality of the editorial process or the speed of publication, is the journal OA, and so on.

Why is it important?
This article compares and contrasts the new author-oriented tools and services that have emerged to facilitate data-driven decisions about which journal to choose. These tools help authors navigate information overload and many provide journal-matching services and manuscript submission decision tools; however, they all have limitations that reduce their usefulness.
