Why is it important?
Acute land degradation, is an issue of global concern as it poses a great threat to stability of world climate, biodiversity and geodiversity. Mechanized scheme farms in Sudan are perceived as a major cause of environmental degradation and land losses. Although studies have documented environmental problems in the Sudan, the dearth of previous studies on the subject do not tally with the actual impact of environmental changes in Gedaref in Sudan. This current study investigated local people's knowledge, attitudes and perceptions about the factors responsible for environmental changes including degradation of soil, natural vegetation, agricultural resources and animal resources, and the community and individual's perceptions of such degradation. It also examined the extent of resources degradation and their impact on the lives of communities living within and around natural forests in Gedaref, eastern Sudan.
Perspectives
This study covers new ground in that it provides a comprehensive understanding of the status and causes of land degradation in Sudan. Findings of this study are vital as they can be applied to help to target extension programmes and communication strategies, as well as aid strategic planning for the development of agriculture, forestry and conservation planning at a regional scale.
