What is it about?

Voice feminization has been developed with various surgical techniques to increase voice pitch. The purpose of this study was to evaluate 12 years of experience using a new endoscopical surgical technique, vocal fold shortening and retrodisplacement of the anterior commissure (VFSRAC) and retraining the voice pattern performed in female patients with androphonia or male-to-female transsexuals.

Why is it important?

VFSRAC and the combined treatment approach to feminize the voice has advantages, such as no external neck scarring, natural voice quality, acceptable pitch increase, preservation of normal laryngeal physiology and singing function, and safety. Considering phonatory physiology and neurophysiological complexity of the voice, we conclude that voice feminization may not be acquired only by a surgical procedure but can be achieved by combining appropriate neurophysiological changes in the phonatory system.
