What is it about?

Hydration is an important advise to keep the vocal folds healthy and produce good vocal economy while speaking or singing. Steam or vapour inhalation is one common method to facilitate surface vocal fold hydration. This study analysed the effects of steam inhalation on voice quality using a few acoustic measures.

Why is it important?

This study has used a simple electric steamer to hydrate the vocal folds and quantified the changes in voice quality after hydration. The findings of this study supports the 'hydration advice' often provided during voice rehabilitation.

Perspectives

Through this study, we have added support (though in a limited way) to the existing practice to educate voice users to increase hydration to promote vocal health. A simple technique to promote this concept has been verified using a lab experiment.
