What is it about?

When tourism leaves a region the consequences can be significant. In the Isle of Man research reveals tourism decline has led to social losses and cultural disruption. Island residents want a revival in tourism to address these.

Why is it important?

The negative consequences of tourism industry development have been widely described. However the negative consequences of tourism decline are less well known.

Perspectives

Tourism is often underappreciated. Growing up in a former tourism destination I was able to see the important legacy of the industry and also the problems caused by not understanding and addressing what happens when it disappears.
