What is it about?

Currently available commercial Capillary Electrophoresis instruments easily reach a few millions of plate numbers. In the present work a Capillary Electrophoresis system with a toroidal platform is proposed and theoretically studied with the goal to extend the achievable plate number.

Why is it important?

There are many classes of compounds which remain without a method for their analysis. Examples of such compounds that are difficult to separate are stereoisomers carrying four, five, six and even more stereocenters. Other mixtures that are hard to separate and analyse are mixtures of isotopomers, peptides with alternating L and D residues, proteins with small changes on the secondary and tertiary structure, to mention a few.

Perspectives

Over one hundred turns can be performed within a toroid with a total length of 100 cm and a suppressed EOF. This is limited only by diffusion of the bands which ultimately causes peak vanishing into the baseline noise. Nevertheless, the predicted number of turns is enough to achieve plate numbers upwards of one billion.
