What is it about?

Saffron is a herb that is used as a food additive for its colour and taste. Different animal and clinical studies showed that saffron has antidiabetic, antiobesity, hypotensive and antihyperlipidemic effects. Thus, it can be used in the treatment of metabolic syndrome disorder. Metabolic syndrome is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

Why is it important?

Metabolic syndrome is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Herbal therapy plays an important role in the management of several disorders in the world. This review suggested that after randomized clinical trials, saffron may be implicated as a preventive or therapeutic agent against metabolic syndrome.

Perspectives

In this review, we introduced several studies related to the effect of saffron on different components of metabolic syndrome including obesity, high blood glucose, hyperlipidemia and hypertension. This review showed the potential use of this plant in metabolic syndrome risk factors especially diabetes mellitus. It can be used as a therapeutic agent in metabolic syndrome after randomized clinical trials.
