What is it about?

Efflorescence are one of the major conservation problems in wall painting exposed outdoors. In this work we demonstrate how it is possible to diagnose the formation of such efflorescence using portable instrumentation in-situ, without the need to extract samples for a further analysis in the laboratory (the classical method to diagnose)

Why is it important?

The diagnosis based on results obtained directly in the field, through in-situ analysis, is more cheap than the classical method, is less aggressive for the cultural heritage asset under inspection and the amount of information that can be obtained in one working day is comparable to the analysis of 100 samples with the classical laboratory instrumentation

Perspectives

The number of users of portable instrumentation is increasing year by year, confirming te adequacy of the modern methodologies based in the use of such portable devices.
