What is it about?

This randomized control trial looks at the effect of return-to-sport (RTS) training with and without neuromuscular (perturbation) training on the walking patterns of women after ACL reconstruction. We found that there were no differences in either treatment group. However, regardless of treatment, walking mechanics tended to improve between one and two years after ACL reconstruction.

Why is it important?

This work suggests RTS training with and without neuromuscular training does not improve walking patterns when delivered to female athletes after ACL reconstruction. Furthermore, recovery from ACL reconstruction may take longer than previously thought.

Perspectives

Gait specific training strategies may be needed to improve walking patterns.
