What is it about?

Tendinopathy, chronic tendon pain, commonly known as tendinitis, tendonitis my be related to increased levels of pain receptors. We demonstrated that the pain glutamate receptor, N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor type 1 (NMDAR1), is 1.) up-regulated and 2.) activated (phosphorylated; phospho-NMDAR1) in tendinopathy. We moreover found that the activation, phosphorylation of NMDAR1, was due to increased levels of a signaling neuronal substance P and metabotropic co-receptors to NMDAR1.

The study demonstrated specific pathways and receptors, which may be used to develop targeted drugs for the treatment of tendinopathy.
