What is it about?

A downscaling approach for wind energy has been used to compute the wind energy potentials over Europe under present day conditions and in future scenarios of 22 CMIP5 models. The majority of the models reveal an increasing annual and winter wind energy output in future decades over Central and Northern Europe, and a decrease for the summer months. Nevertheless, the changes strongly vary between the individual models. Large uncertainty between the models is found for the year-to-year variability of wind energy production under future conditions.
