What is it about?

To date, there are still no licensed antiviral agents available to treat EV-A71 infection, one of the major causative agents of hand-foot-and-mouth disease. In this study, we investigated the roles played by host kinases in EV-A71 replication and identified Rock inhibitors (host kinases) as a potential antiviral agent against EV-A71 replication. More importantly, we showed that siRNA depletion of Rock1 can dramatically suppress the EV-A71 replication and concluded that Rock1 is a novel host factor of EV-A71, which can be further explored as a drug target against EV-A71 infection.

Why is it important?

The knowledge obtained from this study will provide a scientific basis for identification of host factor-based targets for development of prophylactics and therapeutics against enterovirus infection.

Perspectives

We hope that it can be developed as a drug target to treat EV-A71, bringing good news to patients with hand, foot and mouth disease.
