Why is it important?

It is the first rotavirus report of RVA genotypes and its sequences in Mozambique. Considering that the RV1 vaccine was introduced in the NIP of Mozambique in September 2015, the results obtained in the present study emphasizes the need to establish a national surveillance system to monitor the dynamics of RVA genotypes circulation in the country

Perspectives

• be integrated in the pre- and post–rota virus vaccine surveillance and furthermore provide the tools and infrastructure to: • estimate the effectiveness of a rotavirus vaccine through monitoring the reduction in disease associated with rotavirus types co-circulating in the population; • monitor: 1. the distribution of rotavirus types co-circulating in the population 2. the possible vaccine-induced emergence of antibody escape mutants 3. the possible emergence in the general population of genotypes other than those included in the vaccine; 4. the possible emergence in the general population of reassortants between vaccine and naturally circulating wild-type strains
