What is it about?

It is a simple and efficient method used to synthesize acetyl and iodo derivatives of 4-hydroxy-6-phenyl-6H-pyrano[3,2-c]pyridine-2,5-diones and 4-hy-droxy-1-phenylpyridin-2(1H)-ones. Acetyl derivatives are obtained by refluxing in acetic acid in the presence of polyphosphoric acid, and the iodo derivatives are obtained by refluxing in a solution of I2 in dioxane.

Why is it important?

The present method is most valuable in organic synthesis because of operation simplicity, as well as the high yield and easy availability of reagents.
