What is it about?
4-Hydroxy-2-pyridones are the important pyridine derivatives. These compounds are found in natural products having important biological activities like flavipucin, tenellin, mocimycin, ilicicolin and sambutoxin. 4-Hydory-pyridones are also used for the synthesis of nucleotides. Some of them are showing herbicidal activity. The earlier X-ray diffraction studies have confirmed that 4-hydroxy-2-pyridones are more stable than 2-hydroxy-4-pyridones. The synthesis of 4-hydroxy-2-pyridones via condensation of enamines or azomethines with reactive malonic acid derivatives have been reported. The azomethines can also be condensed with substituted dialkyl malonates to give 4-hydroxy-2-pyridones in moderate to good yields. In a view of this we have prepared 3-Acetyl substituted Phenyl-pyridin-2-ones.

Why is it important?
The chemical methods reported in the present paper are typical in the chemistry.
Perspectives
I think this article makes the people to use the rearrangements like Kappes rearrangement reaction along with the use of simple iodination and bromination reactions in their own chemical processes.
