What is it about?

Sensational media coverage on a cluster of deaths after laparoscopic major hepatectomy and laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy in Japan has raised scrutiny about the safety of these newly developed procedures. As an action of professional autonomy, we launched the online prospective registry system for laparoscopic liver resection in October 2015.

Why is it important?

The results of an emergent survey among high volume centers clearly showed that the operative mortality after laparoscopic liver and pancreas surgery stayed not increased even though annual number of cases were gradually increased. The online prospective registry needs several time points to enter items and these items are easy to enter.

Perspectives

We expect that the registry will become one of the largest prospective databases of laparoscopic liver resection and that it will serve as a protective mechanism for patients from this newly developed, technically demanding surgical procedure.
