What is it about?
Higher serum ferritin was found in patients with hepatic fibrosis on top of NAFLD. Serum ferritin was found to be a predictor of fibrosis on top of NAFLD with moderate sensitivity and specificity.

Why is it important?
We found higher levels of serum ferritin in NAFLD patients with liver fibrosis. Serum ferritin showed moderate sensitivity in prediction of liver fibrosis. Serum ferritin is measured by non invasive techniques and could be added to other non invasive tests to predict liver fibrosis in NAFLD.
Perspectives
I hope this article could add to the research area of non invasive tests of liver fibrosis which are trying to replace the gold standard liver biopsy examination by simpler cheaper non invasive widespread test. I find non alcoholic fatty liver disease an important health problem which still in need for more research in diagnosis, pathogenesis and management.
