Why is it important?

In various autoimmune diseases, such as ankylosing spondylitis (AS), changes in the expression profile of miRNAs can be identified. The determination of particular miRNA expression patterns in autoimmune diseases and also a comprehensive understanding of the role of miRNA in disease pathogenesis, seem promising as not only new molecular diagnostic markers but also a novel therapeutic approach for the treatment of autoimmune diseases such as AS.
