What is it about?

Magnesium alloys are currently investigated as prospective biodegradable implant materials. Magnesium has been found to antagonize microbial colonization and could therefore help to avoid implant infections. This work provides proof that the antibacterial activity is due to the pH increase as a consequence of the magnesium corrosion process.

Why is it important?

Implant infections are a major problem in the clinic. Prospective magnesium containing implants have been shown to act antibacterial in vitro and could therefore prevent such infections.

Perspectives

So far the antibacterial mechanism of action of metallic magnesium was ambiguous. By clarifying the mechanism this work may help to develop infection resistant implants.
