What is it about?

This article is about how I used a literature-based reader's and writer's workshop to set conditions for high school students who were refugees to share their life experiences through writing.

Why is it important?

The teacher-researcher positioned herself first as a learner to create an environment where students' voices were privileged. These English learners, some with limited formal education, thrived as their knowledge and experiences were privileged through reading and writing about the refugee experience.

Perspectives

This research transformed me as an educator and an educational researcher. I must always be a learner and position myself to learn from and with students rather than being first a teacher.
