Role of syndecan-2 in epithelial and mesenchymal cancer progression

What is it about?

Syndecan-2 is a cell-surface proteoglycan (protein decorated with glycosaminoglycan chains). This paper discusses how syndecan-2 participates in signaling that regulate cancer cell behaviour. We highlight that the role of syndecan-2 is different in tumors that have epithelial origin as compared to those originating from mesenchyme.

Why is it important?

Since the role of syndecan in cancer pathogenesis is dependent on the tumor tissue origin it is a feasible biomarker/therapeutic target.
