What is it about?

In Australia, the increased number of young dark skinned immigrants has been so great that the incidence of melanoma has decreased in the young Australian population

Why is it important?

Race is a more important risk factor for melanoma than is age. Epidemiologists have not taken this into account when calculating melanoma incidence rates over time. Unless the racial composition of the population is taken into account, misleading conclusions will be obtained.

Perspectives

Epidemiologists in Australia still have not adjusted the incidence data for the change in the racial composition of the Australian population. This is despite 18 years of warnings that the population change has been significant and can affect data.
