We assessed the legacy of nitrate from fertilisers still held up in the unsaturated zone of aquifers in the UK to see how long it could take for it all to come through into groundwater and hence to drinking water or rivers

Why is it important?

This is the first estimate of the response time of groundwater to improvements in agricultural practices at the surface. We have shown that this could be decades. This is important for environmental scientists, water utilities and regulators in their planning.
