What is it about?

This study extends current thinking regarding the impact of international experience, by exploring it as a source of labor market discrimination, especially in developing countries, owing to a 'colonial mindset bias' (a term we have coined to explain the reason for this form of discrimination).

Why is it important?

It is significant because such a form of discrimination may result in unfavorable employment outcomes, in terms of employability, compensation and promotions for individuals without international experience, even in situations when it is not a necessary job requirement.

Perspectives

This study contributes to the existing literature by introducing a new form of discrimination, which may create glass ceilings and glass escalators against individuals who do not possess international exposure. We believe that the findings of the study have important practical implications for organizations which strive to hire and retain the most competent employees, and become equal opportunity employers.
