What is it about?

Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is a severe complication of liver cirrhosis. This is the first study showing that a broad spectrum antibiotic treatment with meropenem and daptomycin is more effective than conventional one in treating hospital acquired SBP. An effective first line treatment improved survival in these patients.

Why is it important?

This study shows that patients with hospital acquired SBP need to be treated with a broad spectrum antibiotic regimen, because: 1) These infections are frequently due to multi drug resistant bacteria and conventional treatment is frequently uneffective, 2) an effective first line treatment improve survival in these patients. In this regard, the combination of meropenem and daptomycin is safe and effective.
