What is it about?

The general miRNA profile is downregulated in most cancers, and this work shows that it is also the case in primary liver tumors. This global downregulation is linked to overexpression of many of the genes regulated by miRNAs, including multidrug resistance transporters. This is the first time that overexpression of multidrug resistance transporters is documented in tumors prior to chemotherapeutic treatment, and that a mechanism is provided.

Why is it important?

The regulation mechanism that we showed here may occur in cancer in general and may explain cancer multidrug resistance.
