What is it about?

The aim of the paper is to present the problem of the underground space use in Poland and to suggest the guidelines in order to develop regulations for its management. The analysis of the current status and future directions for the use of the rock mass allow to identify the potential conflicts. The current regulations on the underground space use (exploitation, disposal and storage of substances) and conditions resulting from the economic policy of Poland formed the basis for the suggested actions required for the underground space use.

Why is it important?

The question of appropriate use of geologic structures in Poland is not regulated by law, nor included in any government or spatial planning documents. What is more, EU legislation also does not address this issue. Recommendations for future legislation in this area have been determined. They should - in case of a conflict of interest, associated with a number of ways of utilization (exploitation of mineral resources, thermal waters, underground storage, etc.) - determine which activities should be a priority.
