What is it about?

The increase in demands of fresh tomato fruits and their products have necessitated the quest for high yielding varieties among tomato farmers. However, the high yielding cultivars are insufficient to meet up with the fast growing global fresh fruit demands. There is a need for an extensive germplasm recollection including the wild relatives, characterization, selection and exploitation of selected but unknown genetic materials.

Why is it important?

Evaluation and characterization of tomato germplasm helped us to understand the breeding values and genetic background of the available materials. This would definitely increase tomato productivity in Ethiopia and environs known for their low production rate. GT biplot projected ‘wild parent’, ‘CLN2498D’ and ‘UC Dan INDIA’ as best performers for most of the related growth, floral and fruit traits. PCA revealed that selection for leaf area, number of branches, number of flower per truss, flower length, number of fruit per truss, fruit weight per plant, total fruit yield etc., increased tomato fruit yield.

Perspectives

Despite enormous achievements recorded in tomato breeding by both traditional and molecular approaches, most choice cultivars produced find humid environments highly unfavorable. This is probably the reason fruit production is low and unable to meet up with rapidly increasing global demand. I hope this article provides the needed information that can spur one to desire areas that concern climate smart agriculture.
