What is it about?

We developed an easy test using standard microtiter plates to detect possible antimicrobial activity at a distance caused by volatiles such as essential oils and their components. Further, we show how protocols can be adapted to test in vitro antimicrobial activity of volatiles in microtiter plates in a way that false positive results can be avoided without having to seal the plate.

Why is it important?

With this novel assay or by taking into account our recommendations possible antimicrobial activity of volatiles on adjacent wells in microtiter plates can be detected. In this way the researcher can choose to take this into consideration when designing an experiment avoiding possible false positive results.
