What is it about?
When combusted, UPVC emits a large proportion of its mass (approx. 58%) as hydrogen chloride (HCl), an extremely irritating and corrosive gas. Acid absorbing fillers can reduce the HCl emissions from UPVC.

Why is it important?
This paper shows that acid-absorbing fillers reduce the HCl emissions when UPVC formulations are combusted in stoichiometric proportion to the moles of filler in the formulation. This has implications for the health impacts of combustion gases released in building fires, as well as the control of HCl when UPVC wastes are incinerated.
