What is it about?
Scientists from CanmetENERGY Devon recently teamed up with Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) researchers in Quebec to assess changes in fish embryotoxicity as crude oil weathered in freshwater with time during a simulated oil spill experiment. Results showed that the increased toxicity for the fish embryos corresponded to increasing concentrations of unidentified oxidized organic compounds in water.

Why is it important?
This study highlights a novel area for oil research, which could help to better understand the toxicity associated with oil weathering for aquatic species.
Perspectives
It is important to understand how hydrocarbons transform under a collective natural weathering processes in water environments, as well as their potential risks to aquatic and benthic species.
