What is it about?

The analysis of material (a mix of mineral debris and water) properties in the perspective of the passage from static to flowing state is influenced by mechanical parameters (particle size distribution) as well as physico-chemical processes. The latter is very dependant of the clay particles.

Why is it important?

The wide range of shear response for a given applied stress related to very tiny changes in clay type show that we are very far to use rheology for linking field to model.

Perspectives

Regarding modelling of debris flow (my primary goal), or other muddy mixtures, a balance should be found between the stability of model parameters and adequate description of the material deformation.
