What is it about?

Hydrodynamic cavitation phenomena was utilized efficiently for industrial wastewater treatment. Vortex diode was used as cavitating device that employ rotational (swirling) flows to carryout cavitation. Removal of three different organic solvents—acetone, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), and toluene from water were studied on a pilot scale.

Why is it important?

Hydrodynamic cavitation process can enhance the rate of reactions and effectiveness of wastewater treatment. Vortex diode induced hydrodynamic cavitation technology is economically viable and easy to design for industrial scale.

Perspectives

Vortex diode that works on the principle of vortex generation for hydrodynamic cavitation, was found to be far superior over conventional cavitating device‐orifice. Up to eight times higher cavitational yield could be obtained as compared to orifice for removal of toluene from water. The results of this study provide newer insight into solvent removal using hydrodynamic cavitation and would have bearing on the treatment of solvent containing wastewater.
