What is it about?

The Brazilian natural gas network is being extended. However, only demand, technical-operational and economic aspects were considered in this process. Environmental impacts were not even taken into account in this case. The study does this verification, identifying which actions are appropriate and which should be reviewed according to this perspective.

Why is it important?

The energy planning carried out in Brazil does not usually take into account environmental effects and when this occurs, these indicators are not always considered. When considering the theme, the study offers public managers an applied and current example of how these decisions could be changed if this dimension were also considered in their decision-making process.

Perspectives

When considered for the supply of an energy commodity such as natural gas, the environmental variable allows to rationalize resource consumption and losses that occur throughout the production process. In addition to preserving the environment, these actions would make the product cheaper, and therefore accessible, for society. This experience is, therefore, an example (even if partial) of modern and sustainable management.
