What is it about?

Telomeres are important structures at the end of chromosomes that helps keep our DNA in good shape. Nowadays, they have been shown to be affected by extrinsic agents to which humans are exposed. In this study, we showed that telomeres were shortened due to exposure to pesticides. This was true for individuals who work at tobacco fields and are routinely exposed to pesticides mixtures. One of the main reasons seems to be the presence of oxidative stress, which can increase the damage to telomeres.

Why is it important?

Tobacco farmers present several health effects due to their occupational risk. Nevertheless, it is important to understand the molecular and cellular effect to, in attempt to prevent such damages to happen, looking for better work conditions at tobacco fields.
