Why is it important?
Considering the aging population and the high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in the elderly, the population is exposed to a higher risk of heart failure and cardiovascular death, this study evaluated the association between vitamin D deficiency and increased risk of heart failure in the elderly attended in outpatient clinic of cardiology. As vitamin D3 acts on its receptors (VDRs) present in cardiomyocytes, arterial endothelium and renin angiotensin aldosterone system, it has cardioprotective effects. In conclusion, there was a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in the elderly, and the evidence shows a strong association between vitamin D deficiency and increased risk of heart failure in this population.
Perspectives
I hope this article will help cardiologists and geriatricians as well as public health managers to implement routines for requesting serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D dosages to track vitamin D deficiency in the elderly in general to reduce the risk of heart failure and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.
