What is it about?
In this work we address the study of riparian plant diversity along mountain rivers in the tropics. Contrary to what the theory indicates, we observe that: (i) species richness decreases downstream and (ii) upstream species are not found at downstream sites.

Why is it important?
Our results show that in mountain rivers the processes that govern diversity patterns are different from those observed in other rivers.
Perspectives
The work indicates new routes to study riparian systems by pointing out that at different scales and in different regions the patterns of diversity contrast with what the current theoretical frameworks indicate.
