What is it about?

Strong genetic structure was found among populations in southern China, which correlated well with the geographic origins of this pest. In large scale, genetic distance play an important role in the distribution of RPW. High level of genetic similar between individuals of Taiwan and Fujian province showed frequent anthropogenic activities between them.

Why is it important?

RPW is one of the invasive destructive palm pests, which has spread over the world. Human activities promote the spread of this pest. Elucidating the population genetic structures of this pest will enhance our understanding of its invasion pathways and subsequently aid in developing an effective control strategy for the RPW in southern China.

Perspectives

understanding the genetic structure and pathway of RPW will provide base knowledge of genetic background of this pest in China. The host plants of RPW are widely distributed and long-distance dispersal is facilitated by the transport of palm plants and offshoots. A management strategy should be applied to populations with a similar genetic structure for the most effective control. In additon, strong phytosanitary measures should be taken to limit palm transportation between infested areas.
