What is it about?

Some patients with anorexia nervosa show liver damage that is associated not only with the elevation of aminotransferases (AST, ALT) but also with the increase in plasma levels of vitamin B12, due to leakage. We found that patients with high plasma values of vitamin B12 have higher AST and ALT values. This data suggests that plasma levels of vitamin B12 might be and early marker of liver disfunction.

Why is it important?

Our findings might help clinicians in order to develop early and personalized treatments for preventing acute complications, also during refeeding intervention.

Perspectives

I hope that future longitudinal studies may evaluate ultrasound examination at baseline ma also during early refeeding interventions.
