Ethanol (alcohol) was found in most refill liquids (e-liquids) for electronic cigarettes that were sampled.

Why is it important?

It is important to confirm the presence of alcohol in these products for a range of professionals, from alcohol addiction specialists to human performance toxicologists evaluating impairment. Prior to FDA regulatory oversight, the e-cigarette industry was able to create products without proper labeling of contents. Therefore, the public had no appreciation that they were [likely] vaping alcohol in addition to nicotine (or any drugs other than nicotine, such as caffeine). Currently, products may and can contain alcohol, but the concentration of alcohol may not be revealed and may vary considerably.
